Kispest, 19th district of Budapest (HU)

Budapest’s 19th district, Kispest with 59,000 inhabitants, is a dynamically developing centre of the southern region of Budapest, where are located major transportation hubs, shopping centres, offices, and peaceful suburban neighbourhoods. Many cultural associations, arts groups and sports clubs are working in the district. The local Government is maintaining 12 kindergartens, 11 primary schools and one high school.

Kispest has a SEAP and a SECAP, is member of the Covenant of Mayors. The municipality has increased the amount of green space by more than 10,000 square metres, improved the energy efficiency of several municipal buildings by upgrading insulation and heating, and extended the network of cycle paths. Several photovoltaic systems are on different institutions of the municipality. Looking for new possibilities, in Kispest solar and geothermal energy also offer many exploitable resources.
As there are several housing estates in the district, we chose to establish an energy community or do a collective action based on them.

Our local hero is a multi-apartment house manager, and we selected a great location where a heating refurbishment with PV system can be implemented. Besides that, there are many attempts and initiatives to solve many problems with energy communities but many of them are struggling because the lack of developed communities and the lack of regular communication between the actors. Without cooperation and expert help these ideas stagnate.

Testimonial

Many green activists work in Kispest, for whom green values and the protection of nature are important. For that reason, an inquiry came from MTVSZ to join the SHAREs project to gain knowledge and experience in establishing energy communities based on housing associations. It is an honour that the local community wants to implement this development in Kispest as well.”

- Mr. Attila Varga, Vice Mayor of Kispest
