Make energy communities fly
The SHAREs+ project advances citizen-led energy initiatives across Southeast Europe by leveraging frontrunner expertise, proven tools, and functional technical platforms. Building on the success of the SHAREs National Gateways, the project replicates this model in new geographical areas while enhancing it for additional use cases, ensuring long-term support for collective energy action beyond the project lifetime.
Over the project period, SHAREs+ aims to support the establishment of 13 new energy communities, while strengthening 50 existing citizen-led energy initiatives by engaging them as Gateway users, fostering greater renewable energy integration, enhanced energy efficiency, and optimized energy management.
The project focuses on Cyprus, North Macedonia, Romania, and Ukraine as replication countries, where decision-making support tools and targeted capacity-building activities will help accelerate the growth of collective energy action. Bulgaria acts both as a pioneer in developing an emerging energy community framework and as a pilot site for citizen-led thermal renewable energy initiative and vulnerable consumer engagement.Austria serves as the project’s frontrunner partner, providing primary capacity-building support and facilitating knowledge transfer.
The predecessor project SHAREs, funded under Horizon 2020, supported local heroes in setting up or expanding their energy community and enabled them to motivate and reach out to consumers directly, including those who did not have an affinity for energy or were simply unfamiliar with the concept of energy communities. In each partner country, a Gateway became the central point where they can find all they need to set up or expand their energy community:
- Austria: energie-teilen.at
- Bulgaria: sharerenewables.bg
- Croatia: energetske-zajednice.hr
- Germany: erneuerbare-energie-gemeinschaften.de
- Georgia: energy4all.ge
- Hungary: tudaster.kozenergia.hu
They were established using the previously published blueprint. SHAREs created this WordPress-template that provides the structure and ideas on how national one-stop-shops for energy communities and collective actions could look.
Building on this success, the SHAREs+ project is now expanding the Gateway model to new countries. Additional National Gateways are currently under development and will be launched in February 2027:
- Cyprus: energy-communities.cy
- North Macedonia: energetskizaednici.mk
- Romania: energiecomunitara.ro
- Ukraine: sharerenewables.org.ua
